Fury coaches upbeat about top-class squads

(Richard Starnes, The Ottawa Citizen) - So we're sitting in the offices of the Ottawa Fury talking football -- soccer, that is. It's the sort of conversation that repeats itself among any fanatics of any sport. We all have opinions.

On this occasion, I am more interested in my companions' opinions than my own.

Carl Valentine was born in Manchester, England, but fell in love with Canada when he first came to play here. He has played for the only Canadian team to reach the World Cup finals, has coached at the club level and run a successful private academy.

Craig Smith is a Scotsman from Greenock, near Glasgow, a tough neighbourhood where soccer was everything. It was probably inevitable Smith would follow in his dad's soccer-playing footsteps and he played in Australia before moving to Vancouver and turning to coaching. >>>

Fury’s Edward Inks Pro Contract with FC Dallas

(RELEASE) - The Ottawa Fury are pleased to announce that former PDL player and youth program graduate Edson (Eddie) Edward has signed with FC Dallas after making the teams roster for the 2010 season.

Edward was drafted to FC Dallas back on January 26th and competed extremely well in training camp and in pre-season action which has resulted in him earning a spot on Dallas’ roster. He becomes the second-ever player from the Fury to play professionally in the MLS; Tyler Hemming, a former Fury PDL player, spent time with Toronto FC and has recently signed with the Montreal Impact.

FC Dallas opened the season on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against state-rivals Houston Dynamo – Edward did not feature in the game. Eddie will return to Canada on July 24 when FC Dallas travels to BMO Field to face Toronto FC. >>>

Fury Teams Go Undefeated on Day 3 at SYL Finals

(RELEASE) - Day 3 was the charm for the Ottawa Fury at the SYL Finals. The five Fury teams collectively went undefeated posting a record of 3-0-2 as group played wrapped up on Sunday. Despite the successes of the Fury teams only one team will be advancing to semi-final play on Monday - the U14 Boys - and will play Schulz Academy with the hopes of advancing to Tuesday's Championship Final. The 4 other Fury teams will play in consolation games throughout the day on

Monday. The U16 Girls put their best effort forward on Sunday and were able to hold the opposition Florida Soccer Alliance scoreless as they wrapped up group play with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Anna Nativ and Carol Ann Hutchinson. The Fury complete group play with a record of 1-2-0 to finish third in the group scoring 4 goals while allowing 7. The Fury will now prepare to face Canadian counterparts West Coast Capitals (1-0-2) on Monday morning's consolation round. >>>

Ottawa Group Seeks USL-1 Franchise

(CBC) - A group pushing its redevelopment plan for Lansdowne Park is shooting for a professional soccer team to help fill its proposed new stadium.

The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group announced Tuesday that it is applying for a United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1) franchise.

The team would play at a new sports venue to be built at the park in central Ottawa as part of the group's Lansdowne Live proposal.

The bid is being made in partnership with John Pugh, owner of the Ottawa Fury soccer club, whose players compete in the USL's lower-level divisions. USL-1 is considered one division below Major League Soccer.

"From a business standpoint, professional soccer is a tremendous asset for the stadium," said Jeff Hunt, owner of the Ottawa 67's Ontario Hockey League team and a member of the Lansdowne Live group, in a statement Tuesday. >>>
